While we know that the processes of climate change will unfold over decades and centuries, we have not done as much as we can to establish institutions that can operate and evolve over those time periods as well. While we have hundreds of organizations around the world conducting vital research into understanding and modeling the relevant processes, we haven’t yet established an organization that is dedicated to the continual and integrated development of the two core modelling fields – earth systems modelling and economic modelling and to embedding their results in a physical visualization
environment that can inform and shape decision-making. Doing so is not only critical to the effective management of theemerging climate crisis here on Earth but also to the future of humankind’s ability to understand and manage complex planetary systems elsewhere. The goal of this project is to create such a space in both physical and virtual form. The resulting space will have two primary and important impacts: (1) the enabling of new insights into the nature and progress of climate change through multi-disciplinary, syncretic collaboration across a diverse array of fields and cultures
and (2) the ability to communicate those insights to critical stakeholders of a wide variety of backgrounds (policymakers, educators, corporate partners, the media) through immersive, affective experience.
With our collaborators at NASA and the MIT Media Lab, we will continue to develop and test our vision for the Earth Operations Center, advancing humankind's ability to see the big picture and imagine it changing for the better.
